It’s estimated that the average person will spend about one-third of their life working. Considering how much time we spend at work, it’s no surprise that research shows that the relationships we have there are crucial for our well-being, career success and satisfaction. Good workplace relationships are so important that south of the border, the U.S. Surgeon General’s Framework for Workplace Mental Health & Well-Being highlights the need for organizations to create opportunities for connection and community in the workplace.

Building solid working relationships isn’t complex. It requires small actions that make a big difference. Start with a foundation of open communication, trust, mutual respect and a shared goal, and then follow these tips to build stronger relationships with clients and employees.

Listen closely

The key to any authentic relationship is to pay attention and be present when getting to know someone. Ask plenty of questions in meetings with clients and colleagues, and then practice active listening. During busy workdays, you might check your phone or email during a meeting, but it hampers your ability to respond appropriately and genuinely connect with others. Reinforce the importance of active listening by gifting headphones to your team and encouraging cameras on during online meetings.

Be inclusive

In group situations, newer team members or those who are more introverted may be less likely to speak up. Reach out and ask for their input—or ask about their life outside of work—to give them confidence to join the conversation and to be their authentic self. Keep collaborative meetings fun by tossing a small soft ball across the room to make sure everyone gets a chance to respond.

Be a team player

Strengthening workplace relationships is anchored in upholding your commitments. Show that you’re dependable by meeting deadlines, being on time for meetings and coming prepared. Being a team player can also mean asking for help or clarification when you need it and owning up to your mistakes.

Don’t be all business

In working relationships, trust is built on more than just handling business matters. To develop a true connection, take time to ask questions about life outside of work and make note of any interests or big days. For birthdays or work anniversaries, a surprise card or a thoughtful gift can work wonders. If you’ve been paying attention and asking personal questions, you’ll know whether to send a set of custom golf balls or an embossed wine kit.

Say thank you

Having good relationships with colleagues impacts mental well-being, and having good relationships with clients ensures the security of the company. Remember this when faced with challenging times, and express gratitude to people who show support. Science shows that expressing gratitude can positively impact both the giver and the receiver. Go the extra mile by sending a thank-you box of chocolates.

Build stronger working relationships

Building strong relationships with clients and employees is crucial for an organization's long-term well-being because businesses cannot exist without them. Strengthen those bonds by practicing active listening, being an inclusive team player, diving into beneath-the-surface conversations and expressing gratitude.
