While the Instagram audience skews young, the social media platform features a large, multigenerational user base. In fact, of its 1 billion monthly active users globally, nearly 36% are aged 35 and older. That reach makes Instagram an effective tool for connecting with a broad audience, and ideal for building trust and visibility. By sharing expert advice, behind-the-scenes moments and patient-friendly information, providers can build an engaged following, establish credibility and strengthen patient relationships—often before an appointment ever takes place. Use these tips to connect with current and prospective patients on Instagram.

Optimize your profile

Your Instagram profile might be a patient’s first impression of your practice, so clarity is important. Craft a strong bio that explains who you are, what you offer and where you’re located. Highlight your areas of expertise and show your personality. Include a website link, phone number and location so patients can easily take the next step. Your profile photo and branding should be clean, consistent and approachable. When patients understand and trust your profile, they’re far more likely to engage with your practice.

Pro tip: Ensure you’re using an Instagram Business account versus a personal profile. A business account provides access to tools to help you grow your following, along with advanced insights into your reach and followers.

Share educational content

Educational content can help boost engagement, especially in healthcare. Patients come to medical accounts for answers, reassurance and clarity—not sales pitches. In fact, 36% of people on Instagram use the platform as a search tool. Answering frequently asked questions, sharing condition explainers and giving preventative care advice positions your practice as a helpful, reliable resource. Use plain language to aid in patient understanding. When patients feel informed, they’re more likely to save, share and comment. These signals boost visibility. Over time, consistent educational content can establish your practice as an authority that patients feel confident about.

Humanize your practice

Instagram is a visual platform. Healthcare professionals can create posts, Stories and Reels to make their practice feel more human and approachable. Show off your space, introduce staff and offer behind-the-scenes tours to help patients know what to expect before they arrive. Use short clips of experts explaining topics or addressing common concerns to promote credibility while creating a sense of familiarity. Encourage people to watch by announcing limited promotional item giveaways for running belts or bike lights.

Actively engage

Instagram engagement is a two-way conversation. Your posts, Stories and Reels are only part of the equation. Respond to comments, messages and Story interactions to help build relationships. Simple actions, like answering questions, acknowledging feedback or using Q&As and polls, can show your practice is attentive and approachable. Engage beyond your own page by liking, commenting and interacting with other relevant accounts to increase visibility.

Launch a “Check-In and Win” campaign. Patients who tag your account or location are entered into a weekly draw for prizes, like travel mugs or fanny packs.

Be consistent

Consistency is key to staying visible and recognizable on social media. Post regularly—without overwhelming followers—to keep your practice front of mind. Two posts per week is a solid starting point. Encourage user engagement. Invite followers to share their favourite “Wellness Wednesday” tip for a chance to win a branded pill organizer or hot/cold pack.

Be sure your posts have a steady visual style, tone and message to strengthen brand recognition and convey professionalism. Strategic hashtag use can help your content reach local and relevant audiences. Plan posts in advance to maintain momentum during busy times. Over time, consistency builds familiarity and encourages audiences to return.

Turning engagement into patient trust

Instagram offers healthcare practices a powerful way to build trust and visibility. By optimizing your profile, educating followers, spotlighting your team, engaging with your audience and staying consistent, you can grow engagement and turn followers into informed and loyal patients.
