Responsible Forestry

Responsible Forestry programs manage our forests in ways that preserve biological diversity and prevent deforestation. They work to sustain and enhance the economic health and lives of those living and working within the forest environment. The three non-profit programs involved in this type of work across the globe are: Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI).

  • FSC Recycled. When this label is seen on a product it means the wood and/or paper included in the product is verified as recycled content.

Cork

Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree (species: Quercus Suber), found primarily in Southwest Europe and Northwest Africa. The bark can be stripped and harvested without damaging the trees, enabling each tree to regenerate every 9-12 years and harvested an average 15 times during its lifetime. Cork’s cellular composition makes it naturally resistant to moisture, pressure, and heat, making it a valuable material in the home and wine industry. Hundreds of thousand hectares of cork oak forests are being managed for ecological and economic sustainability and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) and/or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC). Products containing cork harvested from those forests are highlighted.
